Antigua tragedy: Honeymoon groom dies

ANTIGUA HONEYMOON shooting victim Ben Mullany has died, the hospital in South Wales where he was being treated announced this afternoon.

Mr Mullany, a 31-year-old physiotherapist, was treated in the same intensive care unit at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, where his wife Catherine did part of her training as a doctor.

Dr Mullany was shot dead in their hotel apartment last weekend in what police believe was a bungled robbery.

advertisement advertisement Doctors had to wait until Mr Mullany's condition stabilised following the 24-hour journey home from Antigua before carrying out tests to discover if he was brain dead.

Dr Pushpiner Mangat, the hospital's clinical director for critical care, yesterday praised the "outstanding work" of the clinical team who were responsible for Mr Mullany during his transfer from the island.

Dr Mullany, from Pontardawe, and Mr Mullany, from the village of Ystalyfera, set off on their two-week honeymoon after their wedding on July 12.

The body of Dr Mullany was being flown back to the UK on a separate flight, accompanied by her parents.

Prayers for the couple were said this morning at churches and chapels throughout their home town of Pontardawe, in the Swansea Valley - including St John the Evangelist Church where they married three weeks ago.

I hope that this unforgivable crime will haunt Antigua forever, and famous people like Eric Clapton and Giorgio Armani will leave the island soon.

An absolutely terrible tragedy, both for the young couple and more so for the family and friends who will be devastated ed by their loss.

Maybe the previous blooger is correct. Stay away. Do not go near these islands.

Criminality exists eveywhere, but it does seem that life is cheap in some of these carribean islands.

Not the paradises that they are touted to be.

So sorry to hear about this tragedy - I had my honeymoon in Antiqua 17 years ago and the people were just gorgeous. Very sad

The "peace march" held on Antigua last Friday after the death of Catherine and Ben Mullany was joined by Sir Vivian Richards, former West Indies and Glamorgan cricket hero.
His comment was that if we need to survive, we must be vigilant. These are hard times and we have got to move with these times.

Vigilance would not be enough, Sir.
